Vitamin D is made in the skin under the influence of ultraviolet rays in sunlight. Vitamin D is also found in hay; as hay ages these levels do decrease. Under normal conditions, a horse can make enough vitamin D to meet its needs.

Gemiddeld is deze behoefte 6,6 IE per kg lichaamsgewicht voor werkende, drachtige en lacterende paarden. In de groei ligt dit wel anders, gemiddeld hebben opgroeiende paarden maar liefst 16 IE per kg lichaamsgewicht vitamine D nodig. Dit komt omdat vitamine D belangrijk is voor de ontwikkeling van het skelet bij jonge paarden, omdat vitamine D de calcium en fosfor niveaus reguleert. Met Horse Adds SIS Vitamin D voeg je met 10 gram al 2.000 IE Vitamine D toe aan het rantsoen.
