Description
Why flaxseed?
Flaxseed contains a high level of unsaturated fatty acids, omega-3 fatty acids. These essential fatty acids stimulate the immune system, support healthy skin and shiny coat. In addition, flaxseed has a positive effect on the gastrointestinal mucosa and stimulates digestion. In fact, flaxseed contains mucilages, these mucilages provide a protective layer over the intestinal wall. In addition, these mucilages attract water, giving the manure more volume and stimulating intestinal peristalsis. Flaxseed can therefore be used to cleanse the intestines and help remove sand.
Horses with sensitive and irritated skin may benefit from extra flaxseed combined with Spirulina. This is because spirulina is rich in the omega-6 fatty acid gamma-linolenic acid. The combination of both fatty acids support the healing ability of the skin.
Flaxseed is also an excellent source of energy and contains high-quality amino acids. Ideal for horses that need more energy and/or protein.
Extruded flaxseed
Flaxseed contains a substance, Cyanogenic Glycosides, which is converted in the body by digestive enzymes to cyanide, or hydrocyanic acid. Prussic acid is poisonous and at excessive levels can even be fatal. Therefore, when feeding larger quantities of flaxseed, it is recommended to cook it first. This removes about 95% of the prussic acid. A disadvantage of cooked flaxseed, it has a limited shelf life and oxidizes quickly. As a result, it quickly becomes rancid.
HorseAdds Powerlin is extruded flaxseed. A process in which linseed is heated for a period of time at an acidic high temperature (above 120 degrees). The hydrocyanic acid disappears, similar to cooking flaxseed. After heating, the flaxseed is ground and to prevent oxidation, it is dried. Thus we get a product that has a longer shelf life and does not need to be cooked before use.
HorseAdds Powerlin is thus a healthy addition to your horse's ration.
